Service FAQ

  • If I have my own parts, can the DTLA Bikes' mechanics put them on my bike for me?

Yes, we can build or attach or switch out any parts you would like. There's still a labor charge that remains the same whether or not you get the parts from the shop or bring them yourself.

  • Can I have my bike washed?

Yes, we offer bike washes as stand alone options or as a part of our tune-up options:

CLICK HERE TO SEE TUNE-UP CHOICES

  • When do I pay for services rendered?

You can pay when you drop your bike off during the check in process or you can wait until you return to retrieve your bike to pay. Either way is great. We accept all major CC and in some very special cases Paypal as well (of course cash).
  • How long does a basic tune up take to complete?

Depending on the condition of the bike and which service you choose, the average turn around time is approximately 2-4 days* The other tune up options which are more comprehensive and detailed can take anywhere from 3-7days. We always work our hardest to get you your bike sooner rather than later. *sometimes waiting for parts may delay the completion

  • If I need new parts (wheel, tube, tires, chain etc..) is that included in the cost of labor?

Unfortunately. no. Parts are charged separate of the labor fees. Except in the case of tire flats. That includes the tube and the labor for the changing. However, if a new tire is needed that is extra.
  • Do I have to make an appointment before bringing my bike in for a tune up (or other repairs/maintenance)?

No, you do not have to set an appointment before bringing your bike to get serviced. The mechanic will take a look at the bike and give you an estimated time for completion.

  • I recently had my bike serviced at your shop and my bike doesn't seem/ride well, what should I do?

No idea. Never happened before. Of course, these things will occur from time to time. There's only a few of us and a lot more of you. Simply, bring the bike back. We will take a look at it no problem. Although extremely rare, there have been instances where a slight adjustment or minor issue was overlooked. In an effort to avoid this and situations related, we encourage showing, telling, pointing out, and feeling free to express to our very capable Staff, who are eager to service you and your bike with loyalty and respect.
  • Will I be notified when my repairs have been completed or should I stop by frequently?

Once your bike has been completely serviced one of the DTLA Bike's staff members will give you a phone call and/or send you an email stating you are able to retrieve your bike.

RESPRO FAQ & More Info

  • What or who is a Respro?

Established in 1993, Respro® (UK) Ltd is a leading player in developing solutions to problems found in the urban sports environment. A British Company, Respro® produces uniquely exportable products and a brand range that works both at a local and a global level. From its UK manufacturing it currently supplies products to over 26 countries.

    What We Do
Respro® develops products under three distinctive brands: Respro® Masks, Hi-Viz™ and Team Respro®. The products that we develop are brought about by observation and a challenge to make things better. The products are intrinsically valuable, assisting in the solution to problems that exist in work and leisure activities. Whether they be anti-pollution masks, reflective safety gear or race support products, they incorporate quality materials and up-to-date technology, and involve considerable time identifying the problems and accommodating user needs. Respro’s successful reputation is underpinned by quality, reliability, creative style, pragmatic attitude, attention to detail and soul; a mix of characteristics that makes Respro® unique in its field with a reputation for bold, creative and functional design solutions.

    The Team
Respro® is made up of a core of key people integral to a smooth running company. They are as important to the company and its clients, as the company and it’s clients are to them. Respro® also partners up with expert external resources, cross referencing ideas and concepts with its own internal capabilities. This combination has made Respro® and it’s team responsive, flexible, effective and efficient, placing it in a good position for future product and market developments.

    Respro® Masks
Respro® Masks have been manufactured and distributed from the UK for over 20 years and can still claim the title of ‘the original and the best’. The range is expanding into new markets worldwide as the need for protection from pollution in our urban environments increases. Increased awareness of air quality, due to recent pollution episodes in China and Singapore, has made it a permanent annual topic of discussion and one that is firmly on the global problem map.

Coal and wood fire burning together with the threat caused by petrol and diesel burning vehicles reduce air quality to harmful levels. Respro®Masks provides a solution to the pollution issue, makes a statement about the air we breathe and is most definitely a product of its time.

  • What's this Respro Mask all about?

The Respro mask focuses on the ‘urban trainer’, the ‘home runner’ or the multi-sport end user where breathing rates are typically higher than your average commuter.  Improved comfortability are key to this level of personal endeavour.

For improved air flow and comfortability the two Powa™ Elite valves on the mask allow faster air flow characteristics when breathing out at elevated breathing patterns, ie when you are giving it the beans from A2B which equates to less back pressure, less dampness in the filter, improved filtration, lower inhalation resistance all of which result in improved comfort and performance.

Each package incorporates a complete mask fitted with a Hepa-Type™ particle filter for filtering submicron particles like diesel smoke, pollen, brake lining dust and any aqueous water vapor particles that can carry various chemicals in the air. A spare combination filter is also supplied as part of the package allowing filter interchangeability making every mask suitable for use in a wider variety of environments from inner cities to the countryside.

A graphics rebuild for the look of the mask fits it squarely in the sports arena rather than the ‘scare the hell out of everyone’ arena.

  • What size do I need?

As a rule of thumb mask sizing is as follows:

     a. 5’ Light Build = Small
     b. 5’ Heavy Build - 5’6’ Average Build = Medium
     c. 5’6” Heavy Build - 6’ Average Build = Large
     d. 6’ Heavy Build - 6’+ Average Build = X-Large

If you need further assistance feel free to Call 213-533-8000 or Email the DTLA Bikes' Respro Expert with the following information:

    • Height:
    •
    • Hat size:
    •
    • Physical build:
    •
    • Eye to chin length:

    MEASURING GUIDE:

    Neck Size:
Using a piece of cotton or string, measure the circumference around the neck. Use a ruler to determine the length of string. This is the neck circumference. Easier still check your shirt size.

    Head size (AKA Hat Size):
Using a piece of cotton or string, measure the circumference around the head just about the eyebrow. Use a ruler to determine the length of string. This is the head or hat size circumference.

    Eye to Chin:
Take a piece of string and place it between the eyes on the top of the nose bridge, run the string over the tip of your nose and down to just under the bottom of the chin. This is the eye to chin length.

  • How do the filters function?

Each filters type has a primary use in a specific environment.

    1. The City™
    2. Uses Dynamic Activated Charcoal Cloth (DACC™) a 95% pure charcoal weave, originally developed by the U.K. Ministry of Defence for use in the protection against chemical and bacteria warfare situations. We use DACC™ to effectively filter out Primary pollutants associated with vehicle exhaust emissions. The DACC™ is laminated with medical grade non woven polypropylene material which filters particulates from the air and helps prevent them from entering the respiratory system. The City™ filter offers protection against: - Hydrocarbons. e.g. Benzene; Pyrene;1,3 Butadiene. - Acid gases. e.g. Nitrogen dioxide; Sulphur dioxide. - Photo-chemical pollutants. e.g. Low level Ozone - Particulates. e.g. Black smoke; Pollen; Lead oxide.
    3.
    4. The Sports™
    5. filter uses electrostatically charged fibres to attract airborne particulates down to 0.3 microns in size. 1 Micron = 1/1000mm. Unlike most particle filters which rely on mechanical retention, which inherently results in high inhalation resistance or very large cumbersome filters, the Sportsta filter offers extremely low inhalation resistance, by like comparison. The Sportsta™ filter offers protection against: - Pollen dust; Building dust; Clay dust; Grain dust; Soya dust; Carbon dust; House dust; Cigarette smoke. - PM10’s. e.g. Diesel smoke. - Lead & Tar.
  • What is being filtered out?

Each filter has sub-micron filtration capability. What this means is that it is able to trap particles less than one micron in size which is more than capable of the removal of 2.5 micron particulate material (PM).

Typically particulate pollution in the cities appears to be in the 2.5 micron size range and above. Particles smaller than this are known as respirable dusts, which can lodge deep within the lungs and air sacs. This is the more dangerous type of particle pollution as chemicals from vehicle exhaust gases combustion known to be toxic, are carried by means of the respirable particles. Hence the need for a Hepa-type™ submicron particle filter.

The DACC™ Activated charcoal layer within the Techno™ filter has excellent adsorption properties when it comes to SO2 and NO2 uptakes. With this capability and its capability of filtering VOC’s it is the best filter available in our range for dealing with the broad spectrum of pollutants commonly found in major cities across the globe.

  • Can I wash & re-use FILTERS?

    NO!

The filters function as, filters. They serve as a barrier between you and the particulates in the atmosphere. If you were to wash and reuse a filter, you would diminish the purpose of the filtration system and destroy the intended use for the mask (other than looking badass, of course)

In short...the filters do require replacing.

Professionally, we recommend that the filter should be replaced every month or every 69 hours, whichever is sooner, however in the off chance case that usage is sporatic,  once a filter becomes noticeably discoloured it should be discarded immediately (all filters are made of organic materials and are biodegradable)

  • Replacing the filter

Connect with DTLA Bikes   How are we doing?   We Google, do you Google   We Instagram-a-bam-a-lama-wham-a-ding-dong

  • Will the valves & filters only work with certain masks?

All our filters are interchangeable, provided they are the same size. You can make your own mask from a combination of parts. like the Sportsta™ mask with Techno™ or City™ or Cinqro™ filter or Allergy mask with Powa™ Elite valves.

  • When would I change the valves, do I need to?

The valves should not need replacing on a regular basis assuming that they are maintained properly. On a monthly basis, it is advisable to flush the valves through with warm water, allow to dry and apply a little talcum powder to prevent the valve from sticking. On the Powa valve, it is essential that you locate the two pins, nearest the hinge, properly into the body of the valve, and check that they are seated properly.

  • What's the best mask for an urban setting?

Any of the following masks which come with a combination filter would be suitable for environments where pollution is high and full of exhaust gases and various particulates including PM10, PM2.5 and respirables (sub-micron).

    TECHNO MASK  ULTRALIGHT TECHNO PLUS

A combination filter has both a Hepa-type filter layer and a DACC layer. This combination of Hepa-type filter layer and DACC in one single filter provides submicron (smaller than PM 2.5) dust filtering capability, together with DACC capability for filtering gases (VOC’s /Acid gases) and vapors . It is the best type of filter available in our range for dealing with the broad spectrum of pollutants commonly found in major cities across the globe.

Typically particulate pollution in cities appears to be in the 2.5 micron size range, above and below. Particles smaller than this are known as respirable dusts, which can lodge deep within the lungs and air sacs. This is the more dangerous type of particle pollution as chemicals from vehicle exhaust gases combustion known to be toxic, are carried by means of the respirable particles. Hence the need for a Hepa-type submicron particle filter together with a DACC Activated charcoal layer.

The usable lifespan of the filter is based on the characteristics of the active urban cyclist. If you are using the mask for another activity it still applies, but your breathing rate and activity would put the lifespan of the filter at a proportionally shorter or longer time. If your breathing rate is say half that of a cyclist then the effectiveness of the filter would be twice as long. For cycle commuting on a daily basis we recommend that the filter should be replaced every month or every 69 hours, whichever is sooner.

    FILTERS

  • How and how often should my MASK be washed?

(This is in reference to the external and exposed part. The filter is typically encased by or surrounded by the mask)

It is recommended that you wash the neoprene shell of the mask every month under normal use. To do this it is necessary to remove the filter and the valve first. Although spare valves and filters are available from your retailer, please be careful not to misplace any of the components during maintenance.

Also, feel free to freshen the mask to your liking... essentially, it is basically your olfactory that has to deal with the funk and we deal with the other junk.

  • What's the deal with the flexible nose thingy?

The malleable nose clip deforms easily so that a good fit can be formed around the bridge of the nose. Continuous or exaggerated deformation will eventually cause failure in the metal - it will snap. Once a good fit has been found, it is best to maintain the shape, rather than folding it flat when storing it or when not in use. If it breaks, all you have to do is send a picture of it, indicating size, model and address details to [email protected] and we will send a replacement shell FOC. There is a small shipping charge which is charged at cost and dependent on country location.

  • How often should I replace my BANDIT SCARF?

Under normal conditions the Bandit™ will provide the user with approximately six months protection. The Bandit incorporates D.A.C.C. which is specially coated so that it can be washed. It should be washed on a regular basis to maintain optimum performance. Immerse in a pan of boiling water (this releases the petroleum compounds pounds which are attracted to the D.A.C.C.) and leave to cool. Then wash in warm water using a non-automatic washing powder, rinse and leave to dry.

  • Why is it hard to breathe?

If you feel like Adam Levine when he sings "it's getting harder and harder to breathe. Is there anyone out there? Because, it's getting harder and harder to..." you get where this is going

From the start that you have to understand that any mask will have some level of restriction especially at fast breathing rates for example; when cycling fast.

All of our masks are compatible with aerobic exercise. If you body starts working in an anaerobic capacity then no mask is compatible and you will feel like you need to stop or slow down.

The best masks will use exhalation valves that ‘dump’ heat, water vapors and Co2; the quicker the better. The removal of these components are the key to comfort. You need to get them out of the mask. The Powa™ and Powa™ Elite valve is key at elevated breathing rates.

  • Help my glasses keep fogging up!

First, it's good to know you're actively breathing. Means, something is right.

When using a mask with glasses, it is best to fit the mask first to get the correct fit with no seal leakage, then place the glasses in front of the nose clip on the mask. It is really dependent on the seal of the mask. Having adjustable nose pads facilitates a better fit than plastic moulded rims. A good seal around the nose and cheekbone will mean no leakage in that region which equals no misting. This is how/why glasses get misted up on the inside of the lens. In our experience most glasses wearers manage to figure a way of fitting glasses with a mask without them getting misted up.

  • I have a beard, will it interfere?

Any beard will interfere with the sealing of a mask, it goes without saying. How much leakage is governed by the thickness of the beard and the correct size of mask.

  • Why are the masks so expensive?

We found a few million scientists* one day and asked them the same question. The response was unanimous across the board.

It is much more expensive to replace an entire respiratory system, than it is to purchase a Respro mask.

Also all Respro packages incorporate a complete mask fitted with a Hepa-Type™ particle filter for filtering submicron particles like diesel smoke. A spare DACC™ chemical/particle filter is also supplied as part of the package allowing filter interchangeability.

For improved air flow and comfortability, two Powa™ Elite valves are included with each mask. They improve air flow characteristics when breathing out at elevated breathing patterns. This equates to less back pressure, less dampness in the filter, improved filtration, lower inhalation = mask + 2 filters + Powa™ Elite valves + graphics = value for money

Consider it this way: Hospital bills, breathing machines, home filtration systems, etc... are unequivocally more of a financial burden than a Respro mask. Plus, the alternatives are much more difficult to fit in your bag, pocket, and anywhere.

*We did no such thing. However, we did use common sense to discern the same outcome
